Functional

Functional

The Functional Neurosurgical Unit at SRFT is largely dedicated to the surgical treatment of movement disorders such as Parkinson’s Disease, Dystonia and Essential Tremor, in line with current commissioning approvals. We are particularly focussed on the use of Deep Brain Stimulation surgery for such disorders and are rapidly evolving into a major centre for this with a thorough MDT approach combining  surgical, neurology, psychology, psychiatry and radiology expertise.
This surgery itself involves the very precise placement of electrodes into deep structures within the brain and requires high degrees of accuracy and repeatability for optimum and safe results. We have developed and evolved a highly innovative approach to such surgery, using image verification under General Anaesthetic (traditionally this surgery is done awake).
We are heavily involved in research activities in relation to such surgery and are a founding member of the UK DBS Research Network.

We have presented our work at National and International meetings and recently won ‘Best Poster Presentation’ at the European Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery meeting.
