Clinical Interests

Dr Lalkhen works in a multi-disciplinary team specialising in the out patient management of many chronic pain syndromes, including back pain, whiplash, complex regional pain syndrome, fibromyalgia and neuropathic pain. His anaesthetic practice covers anaesthesia for Orthopaedic, General Surgery, ENT, Neurosurgery and Gynaecology and he takes part in an on call rota that also includes Neurosurgical cover.

Professional Profile

Dr Lalkhen obtained his primary medical qualification at the University of Cape Town graduating with First Class Honors. He spent two years working in South Africa before completing his initial training in Anaesthetics at the Royal United Hospital in Bath. Subsequent to this he trained in Anaesthesia in the Northwestern Deanery obtaining the Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists in 2004. During his Advanced Pain Medicine Training Abdul successfully sat the Diploma in Pain Medicine in 2007. In 2008 he obtained entry to the Faculty of Pain Medicine and in 2016 was awarded an MSc in Medical Education with distinction from the University of Manchester.

Dr Lalkhen is a Consultant in Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine at Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust. The Pain Centre offers a range of pain management therapies including interdisciplinary rehabilitation within a biopsychosocial framework. Dr Lalkhen leads the Spinal Cord Stimulator Service.

Research Interests

Dr Lalkhen has co-authored the Clinical Anaesthesia Viva Book (2nd Edition) and published articles on statistics, non-obstetric pain in pregnancy, medicolegal aspects of anaesthesia and perioperative peripheral nerve injuries.
