Anxiety Management Group

Anxiety Management Group

The Department of Neuropsychology at Salford Royal runs an anxiety management group, led by a Clinical Psychologist and a Senior Assistant Psychologist.

What is the anxiety management group?

The anxiety management group is a group designed for individuals navigating the challenges of long-term neurological conditions alongside anxiety. The group aims to provide a supportive, informative, and compassionate environment where you can share experiences, gain strategies to manage anxiety, and connect with others on a similar journey.

Who is the group for?

This group is ideal for anyone who:

  • Has been diagnosed with a neurological condition, for example, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, stroke recovery, traumatic brain injury or other neurological conditions.
  • Experiences anxiety as a significant part of their daily lives.
  • Is looking for support, strategies, and community to navigate the complexities of their condition.

What will happen in the group?

Group Sessions: There will be weekly two-hour sessions over 7-weeks. There will be six sessions in a six-week block and a reunion session one month later.

Activities: A mix of discussions, skill-building exercises, mindfulness practices, and education on managing anxiety and neurological conditions.

Supportive Community: An opportunity to connect with others facing similar challenges in a safe and confidential environment.

What will the sessions cover?

The theme of the sessions are as follows-

Session 1: Introductions and getting to know the group. Where does anxiety come from?

Session 2: Understanding anxiety and the impact of having a neurological condition.

Session 3: Monitoring anxiety and unhelpful thinking styles

Session 4: Managing bodily sensations.

Session 5: Managing psychological symptoms.

Session 6: Facing your fears.

Session 7: Review and coping in the long term/relapse prevention.

How can I join an anxiety management group?

If you are already being seen by neuropsychology then speak to your clinician about a referral to the group. If you are not, and you feel this would be of benefit to you, then please ask any medical professional involved in your care to send a referral to neuropsychology. You will need to be a patient within Salford Care Organisation to attend.

Evaluations

We look at the outcomes from all of our groups to see if they are helpful for those who attend and to make sure we are delivering an intervention that effectively meets the needs of our patient group. We will be asking those who attend to complete questionnaires and may be invited to a short interview to talk about your experiences with the aim of continuous improvement and update of the group.
