Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus Pathway

Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus Pathway

Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus pathway

At the Manchester Centre for Clinical Neurosciences there is a care pathway for patients suspected to have Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH).
NPH is a challenging diagnosis to make.  It is usually suspected based on a brain imaging report* but has to be associated with typical clinical symptoms.

All referrals should be made using the Referral to NPH MDT form. The completed form should be sent to nph@nca.nhs.uk.
Out-patients: after review in the NPH MDT, some patients will be offered an appointment in the NPH clinic, some may not be deemed suitable for the pathway, and for some, further information will be requested.
In-patients: the same process applies as above, but for some patients, the NPH MDT may advise further investigations to be carried out in the hospital where patients are already admitted (“DGH in-patient NPH”) to avoid delays resulting from them waiting for out-patient appointments.
